Three lone Jewish activists who sought to gain world attention to the plight of their people through political assassination: Samuel Schwartzbard (killed Simon Petliura in 1926 to protest the killing of thousands of Jews), David Frankfurter (shot Wilhelm Gustloff in 1936 to short-circuit the growth of Nazi sympathizers), and Herschel Grynszpan ( killed Ernst vom Rath in 1938 to avenge the deaths of Polish Jews and precipated Kristallnacht).
