As issued, in original stiff decorative paper over boards. Spine has been repaired with transparent tape, otherwise only light wear to the covers; contents are generally clean.
Originally issued in London in 1808, this is the first American edition of this charming juvenile tale comparing the hard-heartedness of Austerus with the kindness and generosity of Humanus. With six full-page engravings in addition the frontispiece; additionally, a large wood-engraved device on the title and at the tail of the final page. One in-text cut of two boys ice-skating above the opening page of the text. The six full page wood-cuts are printed on leaves with blank versos. Shaw & Shoemaker 33546; Rosenbach 514; Welch 1381.
