London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1870. These Sanskrit tales of the vetala - a huge Bat, Vampire, or Evil Spirit appearing as a jinn - date from the eleventh century. The explorer-adventurer Richard Francis Burton,was a talented linguist, and may have spoken upwards of forty languages; he had a fascination for Eastern folk tales and eroticism. His translation of the "Thousand Nights and a Night" remains the gold standard. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. [Bleiler, 319] Bound in blue leather with black tips and spine; five raised bands; decorations and rules in gilt; titling in gilt within a red panel. Clean text; xix; 319 pages; top-edge is gilt. With thirty-three illustrations by Ernest Griset. Vintage bookseller label on the front paste-down. The textblock is very bright and supple; some spotting to the endpapers.Rubbed at the margins. A solid copy, that remains attractive despite the minor condition issues.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Ernest Griset. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
