Hudson River Views

LIVINGSTON, M[ontgomery] (1816-ca.1860).

Views from the Hudson.

[New York, No publisher, circa early 1840s]

Set of lithograph views of the Hudson Valley by Montgomery Livingston, comprising the following:

"View from the Hudson" (Title page);

"Clermont, R.L. Livingston";

"From Clermont, E.P. Livingston, Esq.";

"From the Country Seat of R. Auchmuty Esq., Tivoli"; and

"From Snake Point, Clermont".

Oblong folio (12 x 19 inches), [5] ff. (Lithograph title and four lithographic plates, signed on the stone; mounted/silk-backed, some handling soiling and wear, repairs to tears at margins), loose as issued, housed in modern red leather-backed grey cloth portfolio with pasted cover label.

Most likely created for private circulation only, and likely only among the Livingston family.

Montgomery Livingston lived most of his life at Clermont, the estate built by his great-grandfather, Chancellor Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813). He studied art in Europe (1831–1838), primarily in Geneva, Switzerland. He was principally a landscape painter, and although his artistic career coincided with the peak of American landscape painting, he was not strictly aligned with the Hudson River School, although he obviously created Hudson River views. "His paintings and drawings of the landscape reveal careful composition, attention to light, shade, and texture, and an appreciation for the ordered beauty of nature".

With later Introductory text and description by Kenneth W. Maddox, dated 9 January 2000, laid in. Oblong folio, [4] pp.
