Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, red morocco labels. Some spotting and toning. Rubbed and darkened, marbled paper worn at board edges. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Orr of Barrowfield to front pastedowns, bequest label to flyleaves, ownership inscription of John Orr to title-pages, small library stamps to verso of title-pages. The first edition of this ‘immensely popular’ (ODNB) and many-times reprinted account of the physician John Moore’s (1729-1802) travels in Europe, where he met Voltaire and Frederick the Great. A sequel, concerning his visit to Italy, also followed later. ESTC T64314.

Established in 1957, McNaughtan's Bookshop is the oldest surviving secondhand and antiquarian bookshop in Scotland.
