About This Item

Boston, MA: John W. Luce & Co, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First American edition of the English translation by Frederick Eisemann, 1913. Paper over boards, ivory paper spine, evenly sunned. Minor bumping to corners. Otherwise a crisp, good+ copy. No former owner marks. Arthur Schnitzler (1862 – 1931) was an Austrian author and dramatist, considered one of the most significant representatives of the Viennese Modernism. Schnitzler’s works dissected turn-of-the-century Viennese bourgeois life, making him a sharp and stylistically conscious chronicler of Viennese society around 1900. A member of the avant-garde group Young Vienna (Jung-Wien), Schnitzler toyed with formal as well as social conventions. He was the first to write German fiction in stream-of-consciousness narration. His books were banned and burned by the Nazis.
