London: Faber & Faber, 1963. Laid-in are Ruari McLean's business card, a postcard signed by him to Edward Naumburg, a hand drawn map, and other pieces of ephemera relating to Ruari McLean Associates. Edward Naumburg was an important book collector and vice-chairman of Friends of the Princeton University Library. The important Naumburg Collection of Joseph Conrad and Ford Maddox Ford was featured at Princeton University Library's Exhibition Gallery. An account of the exhibition fills 11 pages in The Princeton University Library Chronicle, Vol. 42, No. 3 (SPRING 1981), pp. 187-197. Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket. The jacket is protected by a removable Brodart clear-plastic sleeve. NOT price clipped (45s net). Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are crisp, clean and unmarked. 72 plates (8 in color) and 70 text illustrations. Describes work by Pickering, Whittingham, Baxter, Evans, the Danziels, Fawcett, Cundall, etc. Traces the history of the earliest commercial color printing, chromolithography, Victorian children's books, illuminated gift books, yellow backs, publishers' decorative bindings in cloth and paper, etc. The scope of this volume is the design of books as a whole, between 1837 and 1890. Gives precise explanations of early color printing techniques. Bound in the original red cloth, stamped in bright gold over a maroon spine panel. Complete with dust jacket.. First Edition. Hardcover.
