About This Item

[Signatures: A-P8, Q4]. Vélin d'antiphonaire à rabats. (Reliure ancienne.) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Illustrated by approximately 150 woodcuts (including several repeats); a few full-page, most half-page or smaller Include nearly full-page view of Venice, Corphu, Modone, Candia, Rhodes and Cayro in which 2 large cuts on facing pages present a single view. The cuts mostly depict cities, ports, buildings, Biblical sites, sites relating to saints, and exotic animals. Text is largely adapted from "Libro d'oltramare", Niccolò da Poggibonsi's account of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1346-1350, which circulated widely in manuscript but was first published in its original form in 1881. Persistently misattributed to Noè Bianco (died 1568), perhaps by confusion resulting from author statement given for the first time in a 1610 edition. Noé Bianco is the author of an unrelated pilgrimage narrative describing his 1527 voyage to the Holy Land, published in 1566. This edition is « extrémement rare » (Essling). Then in Venice in 1518, this 1519 edition being a simple reprint of this one. Most of the cuts are derived from cuts in the original (1500) edition; a few, including the first four cityscapes (Corfu, Modon, Crete, and Rhodes) are based on illustrations by Erhard Reuwich in Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam by Bernhard von Breydenbach (1486). Brunet, Manuel du libraire 5, 1167 didn't know any Venice edition before 1521. USTC 765102 : Gives one copy only (British Library) and also only one copy for the 1518 edition (Venezia, Biblioteche della Fondazione Giorgio Cini). Some dampstaining and brown stains. The verso of the last leaf has been lined. 3 handwritten pages in Arabic at the end. - -.
