NY: Wiley and Putnam, 1845 With the penciled signature "Charles T. Jackson, Boston" on the title page. Charles Thomas Jackson (June 21, 1805 - August 28, 1880) born at Plymouth, Massachusetts, born to a prominent New England family, went on to become a physician and scientist that was also active in medicine, chemistry, mineralogy and geology. He was the brother-in-law of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and appointed U. S. Geologist for the Lake Superior land district, although he was eventually dismissed from his position. He was known for taking credit for discoveries that were not his to claim, and eventually went mad, being committed to the McLean Asylum where he died in 1880. [2], xxviii, 280pp, [24], with page 1 mis-numbered as page 2. Bound in blind stamped brown cloth, inner joint split, covers show edge wear with loss to upper/ lower spine edges. Pencil markings as someone was trying to determine who the author was.
