The French edition was not issued with a dust jacket but this copy has a clear acetate wrap which is chipped and torn but has protected the covers over the years. The summer 1958 issue of Verve, Vol. IX, No. 35-36, the penultimate issue of the famed arts magazine devoted entirely to the last works made by Henri Matisse, between 1950 and his death at the end of 1954. The volume is a work of art itself with 40 bound-in lithographs printed by Mourlot Freres (8 of which are double-page, 2 are three-page, and 3 are four-page) and 38 heliogravure plates finely printed by Draeger Frere (who also printed the text pages.) The cover was reportedly designed by Matisse and the process of converting his cut-outs to lithographs began under his supervision in 1954.
