About This Item

Paris: Ernest Flammarion, Editeur, [1897]. viii, 424pp. With original white printed paper wrappers bound in. Finely bound in a twentieth-century designer binding; embossed and onlaid morocco designs to each board, the upper depicting a ship on frozen waters, two huskies, knotted rope and the title 'Vers le Pole', and the lower with two leaves on a stem with a sunset over the waters in the background, each board inset within navy morocco, marbled endpapers. A trifle rubbed to extremities, joints, small scratch to lower board. A remarkable copy of an early French edition, bound - by person or persons frustratingly unknown - with elaborate embossed morocco designs, of Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen's (1861-1930) account of the Fram expedition of 1893-1896; an attempt to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the natural east-west current of the Arctic Ocean. . 8vo.

Terms of Sale

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
