About This Item

1885 Vanity Fair Men of Times Illustrated 100 COLOR Plates Liszt HUGE FOLIO

A rare printing of Vanity Fair, "Men of the Day". Vanity Fair is best known for full-page, color lithographs of world celebrities and dignitaries including artists, athletes, royalty, scientists, authors, and scholars. More than 2000 of these images appeared, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of the period. According to author and editor Jehu Junior,

"The Vanity Fair Portraits are and remain the only work of their kind ever attempted; and as such they must always hold a special and distinct place as a permanent record of men of eminence in the nineteenth century."

This portfolio features the artwork of artists Ape, Lib, and Spy and includes 100 full page color plates of famous figures including:

· Colonel JP Mahon, "Mhagthamma"

· Sir TE Colebrooke Bt, "Lanarkshire"

· Edward Brydges-Willyams, "Cornwall"

· Justin McCarthy, "Irish History"

· Earl of Limerick, "a Freemason"

· Samuel Charles Allsopp, "Burton Beer"

· Franz Liszt, "the Abbe"

· Oliver Wendell Holmes, "the autocrat of the Breakfast Table"
