Leonard). Throughout the text black and white line illustrations from contemporary sources are used to illustrate. Coloured endpapers. Navy blue boards with gilt writing on spine. Illustrated dustwrapper, based on the drawing in the Illustrated Sydney News, 9 August1879, with white writing on the front panel and spine. This abridged version from 1969 is from the original 1877-8 publication in five volumes of John Stanley James "The Vagabond", "Australian urban life has never had a chronicler quite like the Vagabond. Renowned journalist and 'eminently unconventional character', he knew poverty and road from first-hand experience about the degradation and brutality of lowlife in the festering slums of the Victorian era.". dust jacket has sought tears and rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine section and at the top right-hand corner of the front panel, previous owner's name partially hidden on the dark brown front end paper, and repeated at the top of the half title page, faint foxing to the title page opposite the frontispiece, no annotations otherwise.
