About This Item
Philadelphia: C. H. [Carlton Harlow] Graves; Philadelphia and Naperville: Universal Photo Art Co, 1904. Stereoview. Very Good. A curved-back stereoview on a gray mount. 19 cm x 9 cm. In the Art Nouveau (Platino) Stereograph series. A fine Example, with Two Japanese chops on the back. Photographic immage of a line of Japanese women awaiting an immunization shot administered by a taller man in a white uniform. 1901-1907 was a period when Chinese immigration was cut off but Japanes immigration was unrestricted. 120,000 immigrants from Japan came to the United States during that period. The official has hold of the arm of a Japanese woman who has pulled her arm out of her kimono sleeve, partially revealing her breast. The scowls and unhappy looks on the face of many of the Japanese seeing this being photographed suggest that this was offensive to the immigrants who probably felt helpless to protest. For the photo company, this was probably just another racist opportunity to titillate white Americans by featuring topless or partially exposed non-white women from elsewhere.
