About This Item
New-York: Leavitt, Lord & Co. 180 Broadway; Boston: Crocker & Brewster, 1836. First edition.. Spine and edges somewhat rubbed, with a little chipping to the label; some light foxing and soiling; a good to very good copy.. 12mo (7.63 x 4.5 inches), original blue-green cloth spine, drab boards, printed paper label, 225, [1] pages. The horse at the cider-mill; the mules in the press-room of the American Tract Society; and the watchman who walks his drowsy round until he falls asleep; are not the only beings that spend their lives in traversing a circle." The tale of a young man from modest circumstances who after a college education decides the world owes him a living; inevitably, he concludes the tale back at his father's wheelwright shop with sweat on his brow from honest labor. The political journalist and sometime novelist Stone does not exactly wear his own learning lightly here, though the occasional satirical jabs are pleasant enough. Wright I, 2510. Pencil ownership signature of A. Almendorf, Palmyra, N Y. on the front free endpaper. (On the subject of ups and downs, no evident link of Elmendorf to the prophet has been found.)
