Cover Photograph by Jerry Palin. Paperback: Pictorial Wraps. This is my recollection of the 43 months and one day that I spent as a soldier in the U.S. Army, during World War Two. In no way does this pretend to be a history of The 10th Mountain Division, or even K Co. of the 87th. I was only one of thousands, so this is my memories of that conflict, forty years later. As I kept no journal, I have referred to the works of many other people, and have had help from many of you guys that were there with me. So to you who were there, you will disagree with parts of this. That's fine! You go ahead and write your recollections, and I'll disagree with you. Altho I've tried, I don't lay any claim that this is accurate. It boils down to MY recollections, and I'm not too serious about the whole thing. I've been wrong before. Ski Troops were the Mountain Infantry of WW Two. My outfit all the way was K Company, 87th Regiment, I Oth Mountain Division. The Up Hill part was the way it was from the time that the idea was conceived by a group, one of which was C. Minot, "Minnie," Dole, who is credited with being able to sell the idea of specially trained troops that would be trained in Winter Warfare to the Brass of the U.S. Army. That, my friends, was Up Hill all the way. Selecting a sight for Winter Training was an Up Hill task. CAMP HALE at Pando, Colorado was chosen. The camp was built at an elevation of 9500 feet. According to history the first unit to be activated was the 87th Battalion, on November 15th, 1941, just before Pearl Harbor. When we got to Camp Hale in 1943, everywhere you looked it was Up Hill. It seemed that every time we left camp it was Up Hill. We made an Amphibious landing on Kiska in 1943, that was Up Hill. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR.
