About This Item
New York: St. Martin's Press, 1996. Presumed first edition/first printing. Hardcover. Very good condition/good. x, 352 pages, [1]. Illustrations. DJ flap creased. DJ has slight wear and soiling. This harrowing story of life in modern Iran is told from the unique perspective of a foreign journalist and Islamic bride. Mosteshar returned from Oxford to her homeland of Iran with the aim of explaining her country to the world. But when the religious revolution transformed the country into a conservative Islamic state, she was thrust into the frightening life in Iran under the mullahs. An unflinching look at modern Iran from a woman's viewpoint--under the veil. Mosteshar, born in Iran but educated in the West at Oxford, returns as an Islamic bride to the country of her birth, only to find herself at the mercy of a society in which she has lost her status and rights, where she is valued as but half a man. Chilling, informative, and fury-fueled, this book pulls back the curtain hiding the shocking picture of female opprression. Life in Iran today as seen by a woman born in Iran but schooled in the West, including Oxford, and a qualified journalist. She returns to Iran prior to the overthrow of the Shah and documents the hellish changes that accompany the overnight transition to a conservative Islamic state. It is not one world. not yet or soon. She now lives in England. The author has worked as a foreign correspondent for the Financial Times, The Economics, the Observer, and the Independent as well as being a broadcast journalist.
