About This Item

New York: The Viking Press, 1962. Bound in the publishers green hard cover with quarter cream cloth and green title lettering to the spine. The 344 pages remain in fresh, clean condition throughout with no inscriptions and are tightly bound. Book sits solid and square. This is the first American edition of an excellent Iris Murdoch novel. Housed in the attractive dustwrapper designed by Bill English with publishers printed price intact on front inside flap. There is light wear and routine signs of handling otherwise a presentable example of this eyecatching dustwrapper. Protected in a removable archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. Photographs of the book and the dustwrapper are available on request. Rather less common than the first UK edition.. First Edition. Fine/Very Good.

Synopsis

The nine characters in this novel are all looking for love; and so closely is the web woven that the actions and passions of each are constantly affecting the others. The irony and pathos of this tangled situation has extended Iris Murdoch's powers to the full, but her mastery of it is complete. Impelled by affection, lust, lost scruple, illusion and disillusion, wanting to be free yet needing to be involved, these characters perform the linked figures of their destiny.
