About This Item

London England: John Lehmann, 1950. Hardback. The Unfortunate Traveller or The Life of Jacke Wilton. Illustrated by Michael Ayrton, With an Introduction. Heavy foxing to end inside covers and edge. Slightly worn corners to cloth. Light blue cloth with gilt lettering. I cannot claim sufficient authority to write a literary introduction to The Unfortunate Traveller. I am unable to assess its calue as literature, nor can I judge its particular effect upon subsequent prose fiction. Certain eminent critics, notably the late Edmund Gosse and that bitter versifier and vastly erudite litterateur the late Sir Walter Raleigh II thought highly of Nashe and particularly of The Unfortunate Traveller. On the other hand, Professor Saintsbury did not. Nashe was a hack by profession, an Elizabethan journalist, whom professor Saintsbury compares to 'one of the not quite best class of 'newspaper men' - Thackeray's Bohemians'. What he possessed over and above the qualifications required of this humble station was an unusually virile and original prose style, an exquistely tender lyrical gift, tremendous integrity and a pen which Dekker described as a 'deadly stockado'.Nashe was in fact as fair an epitome of his great times as one might wish to find. Illustrations. 121 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). Reprint. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Michael Ayrton. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Harcover.
