About This Item
Boston & New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1898. Edwin (Lawrence) Godkin (1831-1902) was an Irish-American journalist who founded "The Nation." He was anti-Tammany Hall, anti-Imperialist, and anti-socialist in his attitudes, and was very influential with America's intellectual class. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition, which has a tipped-in Memorial Page for Godkin from 1902. Brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 265 pages; top-edge is gilt. In addition to the memorial, this is an ASSOCIATION COPY. Tipped onto the FFEP is a calling card "With Mrs Godkin's Love" written, apparently meant for Elizabeth Davies Kingsley, whose bookplate is on the front paste-down. The bookplate in itself is quite interesting, being a design by the American painter Lilian C. Westgate (1880-1963). Quercus speculates that since Miss Westgate was a very young woman at this date, its design may have been a commission that started her career. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket.
