New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1930. Hardcover. Translation by Edmund Gosse. Woodcuts by Allen Lewis. 4to. Brown blind-embossed cloth over bevelled boards with gilt spine lettering, slipcase. vii, 141pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece, full-page illustrations, decorative borders. Fine/very good. Mild slipcase edgewear and rubbing. Quite tight and handsome copy of the tenth title in the LEC's First Series -- colophon at rear notes 1500 numbered copies (this noted as "Printer's Copy" -- The Harbor Press of New York) signed boldly by Lewis. A classic of German romantic literature first published in 1811, this fairy tale novella involves knights and water spirits and proved enormously popular throughout the 19th century, adapted into opera, plays, music, ballet and films. Lewis's illustrations in green and black are superb and provocative. NEWMAN 10.
