New York: Macmillan Company, 1940. Hardcover. Very Good/good. Clare Leighton illus. Brown cloth with gilt title on spine, x and 237 pp, 10-in tall. Illustrated with over 60 in-text and full-page wood engravings by Clare Leighton. First American edition. Originally published anonymously in 1872 in the UK, the first of what was to become his Wessex series novels. Personalized inscription by illustrator Clare Leighton on endpaper, dated 1941. This Centenary Edition of "Under the Greenwood Tree" commemorates Thomas Hardy's birth in 1840. Lightly rubbed at spine ends and corners, bookplate on pastedown. Dust jacket shows light soil, 1-in edge tear on front panel, reinforcing tape on jacket's interior.
