London: Printed at the Eragny Press for Hacon & Ricketts, 1901. Hardcover. Very Good. London, Printed at the Eragny Press for Hacon & Ricketts, 1901 [first thus]. Small octavo, 114, [2] (colophon) pages set in Vale type on Arnold's unbleached handmade paper; wood-engraved title vignette, borders and initials; colophon with wood-engraved printer's device. Original blue papered boards backed in cream linen, all edges uncut; small paper title-label on the front cover; covers lightly tanned and marked, with minimal wear to one corner tip and a small area of wear to the bottom edge of the front board; label lightly chipped at the edges; front free endpaper neatly excised (leaving a 20 mm stub); endpapers and adjacent blank leaf offset and a little foxed, with minimal light foxing elsewhere; an excellent copy. One of only 226 copies (of which 200 were offered for sale), printed at the Eragny Press of Lucien and Esther Pissarro. The title vignette was designed and engraved by Lucien, and Esther engraved the other decorations from his designs. This is the eighth book of the press. 'Un Coeur Simple' is one of three short stories by Flaubert published under the title 'Trois Contes' in 1877. All three were published separately in a uniform format by the Eragny Press ('La Légende de Saint Julien l'Hospitalier' in 1900, 'Hérodias' in 1901).
