First edition of Vetusta Monumenta Quae Ad Rerum Britannicarum Volume IV in half calf binding and cloth boards. A very scarce collection of plates from the Society of Antiquaries of Ancient Monuments. Looking at interesting relics and monuments such as the remains of Glastonbury Abbey and the George Inn, plates produces representing the death and funeral of John Islip, ancient helmets and masks, and more.With only one other volume held in libraries, which is Volume V.Also includes the first part of Volume V bound in, with a total of thirty-two of sixty-nine plates bound in. Illustrated with fifty two plates to Volume IV, including two colour plates and five folding plates, and thirty two plates to Volume V. Collated, Volume IV is complete.Prior owner's book plate to the first pastedown.From the library of Sir William Whitfield, one of the most important British architects of the 20th century. Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
