The U-boat arm of the German Navy lost about ninety per cent of its men during World War II. From the dust jacket: "Jak P. Mallmann Showell ahs always had an interest in German submarines. His father was Diesel Obermaschinist on U 377, which mysteriously disappeared in the Atlantic during January, 1944. When he started research to ascertain the fate of his father, the began to unearth a mass of documentary material which became the foundation of this book. The mystery of U 377 has never been answered, but Showell's quest has produced this unique, objective study of the German U-boat Arm in action. It adds a wealth of background information to those bloody Atlantic battles of World War II. The fascinating account is supported by a wealth of illustration, much of it previously unpublished outside Germany. "
