His father was Diesel Obermaschinist on U 377, which mysteriously disappeared in the Atlantic during January, 1944. When he started research to ascertain the fate of his father, the began to unearth a mass of documentary material which became the foundation of this book. The mystery of U 377 has never been answered, but Showell's quest has produced this unique, objective study of the German U-boat Arm in action.
