About This Item

Rebound two volumes set with custom shaped slipcase, hand-pressed title page from Serendipity Press and bookplates. Each volume is 7½"x 5¾" x 1" in brown leather with marbled paper, gold embossed detail and title on spine. Includes a 1986 letter re: provenance.~~Paul Arthur Bennett (1897-1966) was an American typographer who wrote several papers, monographs, and keepsakes for The Typophiles, which began in the early 1930s as a luncheon club and evolved into an important professional association of Typographers and graphic artists with a wide sphere of influence. In 1938 Bennett traveled to Europe for as Director of Typography for the Mergenthaler Linotype Co. ~~Volume 1 contains daily entries in clean, legible script. Bennett initially wrote on the recto, with later entries starting back at the beginning on the verso. Sailing aboard the MV Brittania to London, he traveled through France, Germany, Belgium, and back, from May - August 1938. Helpfully noting the date, location and each event or topic within each entry, Bennett's writing is organized, engaging, and relatable. He delights in nearly every aspect of the trip, including both his meetings and bibliographic tourism, as well as the culture and sightseeing at each stop of his journey. Personalized typographic gemse inserted at the beginning from Maverick Press and George Hornby. Volume 2 contains a handful of entries from May and June, along with dozens of pages of ephemera pasted in from the journey - telegrams, tickets, calling cards, photographs, receipts, and clippings.~.
