Contemporary half calf with six spine compartments between raised bands. Gilt-tooled title in second compartment and gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments. Marbled paper over boards. Top page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Issued in 16 parts in portfolios. Title pages in red and black, with vignette. Contents: vol. 1. États-majors -- Écoles -- Infanterie -- Cavalerie; vol. 2. Armes spéciales -- Corps indigènes -- Corps auxiliaires -- Marine. The artist Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille (1848-1912) was the official painter of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and became famous for his paintings of soldiers, military life and manoeuvres, and uniforms, all of which are included in this impressive volume.
