About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1840. First edition, first issue. 12mo, 483 pp. Original printed muslin, in the first state, with 105 titles listed in the Harper's Family Library series advertisement on the back cover. The presumed first printing, with the dotted "i" in the copyright notice and unbroken type in the running head on page 9. An exceptionally fine copy, although the front paste-down endpaper has been replaced. Full morocco clamshell box. Dana's anonymously authored first book became an instant classic. Ref: Blanck, Bibliography of American Literature 4434; Zamorano Eighty, 26. "At San Diego [Dana] encountered a considerable group of Hawaiian expatriates (see pp. 175-186) whom he discusses sympathetically." Forbes, Hawaiian National Bibliography 1196 (in error on the binding issue point); Hill 426.
