John Calvin was a 16th-century theologian who is best remembered for his role in the Protestant Reformation and the development of Calvinist doctrines. His life and religious influence have been written about for centuries, though perhaps, none are more valuable than his own words.

Many of the sermons of Calvin were published shortly after his death, including this 1580 English translation of 22 sermons. This absolutely incredible work was first translated a mere 15 years after Calvin's death by Thomas Stocker.

Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. He also wrote important commentaries on the books of the Bible. This work explains relevant Biblical passages, as well as describes the allegorical notes of Church Fathers. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. He also wrote on the development of time and ideas of cosmology.

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa.
