About This Item

London: Antony Roger, 1930. Two photographs of Freda Falconer by photographer Antony Roger [Antony Beauchamp] [Antony Roger Beauchamp Entwistle], both signed by the photographer in the lower margin in manuscript graphite and red pencil, each with Roger's photography stamp on the verso, circa 1930s.

Antony Roger Beauchamp Entwistle was a British photographer and a noted portraitist of Hollywood's Golden Age. He began his career under the name Antony Roger while working out of the family house in London in the 1930s. It was during this time that he photographed a young Vivien Leigh, garnering international attention. He opened his studio in 1939 under the name Antony Beauchamp, another combination of his full name. In the early 1950s he and his wife, Sarah Churchill, actress daughter of Sir Winston Churchill, moved to Hollywood where he became one of the most sought after portraitists of the day. Some of his subjects include, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor, Geta Garbo, and First Lady Margaret Truman.

Freda Falconer was a well known British actress who was a regular performer for the BBC Radio Repertory during WWII. She is best known for her role in the hugely popular radio drama "Dick Barton," as one of the Special Agent's love interests, as well as playwright of the largely autobiographical 1950 WWII play "I Shan't Be Home To Dinner," one of the few successful war plays written by a woman.
