True First Edition, First Printing from 1903 (with appropriate points of issue) of this classic American children's adventure story "reminiscent of Huckleberry Finn,'' based in part on the author's own experiences as a boy engaged in camping & woodcraft adventures during a vacation in the woods, where he developed an appreciation of & love for the natural world & its creatures that would last his lifetime. The year prior to publishing this book, he had founded the group, the Woodcraft Indians (later called the Woodcraft League of America), & also played a role in founding the Boy Scouts of America in 1910. In 552 pages, with Index, + over 200 pen-and-ink drawings by the author throughout text, with cover design, title page, & "general makeup" by Grace Gallatin Seton (the author's wife). Hardcover octavo with light blue cloth decorated with flowers, birds, trees, & moons, gilt seal edges in darker blue to center front, similar design to spine, along with lettering in gilt; deckled page edges. Decorative endpapers. Condition is VG: exceptionally clean inside, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages off-white with moderate, age-appropriate tanning to edges. Former owner's name in pen on dedication page, else unmarked. Light soiling around all edges, mild-to-moderate rubbing, heaviest at both ends of spine, where the cloth has become frayed with many tiny tears.
