About This Item

Edinburgh: Printed by J. Robertson, 1782. 8vo, pp. [2], 179 (i.e. 193), [1]. Nineteenth-century half pebbled green roan, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Lightly soiled and spotted. Joints rubbed, boards darkened in places. Bookplate of J.A. Jamieson and armorial bookplate of John Whitefoord Mackenzie. The prolific plagiarist John Callander (1721-1789) published numerous works, most with their own particular flaws: his annotations on Paradise Lost were partially taken from another edition; his translation of Paul to the Ephesians strictly retained the Greek word order, making it incomprehensible; this edition of poems traditionally ascribed to James the Fifth, printed in part to explicate the older dialect, ‘included helpful notes for those unfamiliar with the Scottish language, but many of Callander's etymological remarks have been considered unsound’ (ODNB). ESTC T146717.
