About This Item

8vo, pictorial pebbled black cloth, gilt illustration of two crossed pistols on front cover, and gilt title, portrait frontispiece and illustrated with ten plates, [ii], 5-54 pp. Inscribed copy and signed by the author. Very slight wear at extremities, normal aging and browning; otherwise very good plus. Manderson (1837-1811) was born in Philadelphia was a lawyer, a distinguished Civil War veteran, and eventually a U.S. senator. He joined the Union army and served as an officer with the Nineteenth Ohio Infantry. He served under William T. Sherman during the Georgia campaign, but was severely wounded and had to resign from the army in April 1865. After the war Manderson moved to Omaha, and would be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1883. This work is about a pair of pistols presented to him by his battalion after the Battle of Stone's River, which were lost after an attack on a supply train later in the War. Many years later the pistols were found and returned to him. The General Casement to whom the book is inscribed is likely to be John S. Casement (1829-1909) of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, who was a Brigade Commander under General Sherman. After the war he would play a role in overseeing the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. ANB.
