The first edition of Andrew Lang's classic anthology of children's fairy tales, with engravings from a number of popular illustrators. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. All edges gilt. Ink inscription to the half title, dated 1893. 9 plates including the frontispiece and numerous illustrations in the text. Collated, complete. Many popular illustrators collaborated with Lang on this work, including L. Bogle, Lucien Davis, Lancelot Speed, H. J. Ford and C. H. M. Kerr. An anthology of stories for children from Scottish collector of folk and fairy tales Andrew Lang (1844-1912). There are over twenty stories to this volume, including 'Casanova's Escape', 'Captain Snelgrave and the Pirates', 'The Escapes of Cervantes', 'Baron Trenck' and 'The Kidnapping of the Princes'. A page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally smart, with a little wear to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Spine is slightly faded. Front hinge is starting to split but is still reasonably firm. Internally, binding is slightly strained in a couple of places but otherwise firm. Faint tidemarks to the bottom of pages 307 to 337, not affecting the text. Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
