About This Item

London: Charles Hindley ...or, the day and night scenes of life in London from the start to the finish! with a key to the persons and places, together with a vocabulary and glossary of the flash and slang terms occuring in the course of the work."slate grey papered boards with, white papered spine browned to backstrip and with light chipping to head and tail, paste down has former owners booklabel (plain printed ) [ F.W.Scrivenor] which has offset slightly to the FEP, age browned as well. The half title is a full and busy page with decoration, browned a bit . first leaf being half title backed with an illustration of Billy Waters ' the one legged musical negro' and 17 lines on him, next are the title page, reverse blank, followed by pages i-xxxiv the introduction. next another title page ( monumental deocrative) with an illustration on the reverse then pages (1)-216 , pp 151-216 being the " key to the persons and places, together with a vocabulary and glossary of the flash and slang terms occuring in the course of the work". The most recent date I could find in the introduction was 1886, the period of the original issue of the parts were the 1820s. Throughout there are many caricature illustrations as well reproductions of adverts of the original parts, scenes from London life etc. Much colloquial humor etc, With a book like this many hours could be spent just flicking through. Internally VG+ the spine is fragile but still intact and serviceable. Board corners are rubbed and splitting. undated [1888]. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Various. 8vo - over 7? - 9? tall.
