About This Item

Waltham Saint Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Quarter brown leather over cloth, bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Spine evenly darkened to a darker brown, gilt lettering completely sharp and original. Boards flexible, no signs of splitting, no bumps. Contents completely fine, free of all markings, signatures, bookplates or foxing. In the original slipcase, which is more like a shipping carton -- plain cardboard, quite worn but intact without splits. A very nice, uncomplicated copy of this classic. Large squarish quarto, set in 14-point Caslon, with the Greek wrapped around the translation, and integrated illustrations by Robert Gibbings throughout. Printed on Barcham Green - Hammer & Anvil watermarked -- handmade paper. The integration of text and illustration here is as good as anything ever achieved by the press, a delightful book.
