About This Item
The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:
John Ball: Ball was best known for writing a series featuring Virgil Tibbs, beginning with In the Heat of the Night. There were seven novels in that series, plus three more featuring Jack Tallon, and nine stand-alone novels. Ball also worked as a broadcaster, daily columnist, science writer, and music critic. Ball died in 1988. This is the second Jack Tallon novel.
Victor Canning: A prolific writer in the mystery genre, Canning didn't do too much with recurring characters. He had three short series, with the Rex Carver series being the longest at four books. Most of his writing was of stand alone novels, of which he published 50. Canning passed away in 1986.
Hugh Pentecost: A pen name of Judson Philips, a man of many detectives. Under both names, Philips published over 100 books, most of which were in one of eight different series. The largest series featured Pierre Chambrun with 23 books. In spite of all these series, almost a quarter of his books were stand-alone novels. This book is the sixteenth Pierre Chambrun novel.
