[no significant wear, just a bit of age-toning to edges of text block; the jacket is a bit suntanned and lightly soiled, with a couple of small closed edge-tears, shallow paper loss at top of spine]. The first of this stalwart New Yorker journalist/critic's two novels (the second, "The Day the Money Stopped," was published in 1957). This "compelling story of one family and in particular of one woman whose unusual character evoked love or hate from everyone who became a part of her life" was awarded a Special Citation in the Fiction category of the 1951 National Book Awards. .
