About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. [tiny smudge on fore-edge, otherwise a tight clean book; jacket nice and clean, slightly tanned at spine, 1.5-inch closed tear and associated creasing at upper left of front panel]. (B&W photographs) "One of the most fascinating and unusual works of Russian drama of the second half of the nineteenth century. The author was a Russian aristocrat whose involvement in the sensational murder of his mistress in 1850 became one of the greatest scandals of coontemporary Russian society. Out of this drama in his own life Sukhovo-Kobylin fashioned a trilogy of plays remarkable for the acidity of their satire against the tsarist bureaucracy and police. [But] above all, they are masterworks for the theatre, since they are splendidly theatrical and encompass not one but several different traditions of writing for the theatre -- from the 'well-made play' of Scribe to the absurd comedy of Gogol." This book is the first translation of the entire Trilogy in English. .
