About This Item
London: Collins and Harvill press, 1967. Binding: Hardcover, dust jacket
Pages: 383
In February 1966 the outstanding Soviet literary critic Andrey Sinyavsky and his friend Yuli Daniel, a well known translator, were sentenced to force labour at a sensational trial in Moscow for having published abroad, under their pen names Abram Tertz and Nicolai Arzhak, works which were alleged to be slanderous and subversive.
Access to the courtroom was severely restricted and the proceedings received only scant and one-sided treatment in the Soviet press, but in the months after the trail a full verbatim record of what took place in court began to circulate clandestinely in the Soviet Union. A copy of this record reached the West, by undisclosed channels, and is the central feature of this book which also includes the texts of some remarkable appeals and protests which have been made by Soviet intellectuals in a unprecedented display of solidarity with their two condemned colleagues.' (Quote from inside front dustwrapper blurb).
Good condition. Tears of the back of dj.
