About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., 1972. First Edition. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. The combined talents of two great naturalists -- Matthiessen, the writer, and Porter, the photographer -- has resulted in a book unlike any other on the human and natural history of East Africa. Both artists roamed the ancient land of man's origins and created parallel statements, one in words and one in color photographs that, brought together, is one of the classic works on Africa. 9.75 x 11.5 inches; 247 pages with more than a hundred full color photos, as well as an index, notes and selected bibliography. True First Printing, First Edition with dark brown cloth covers and two prices in upper corner of dustjacket's front flap. Inside covers and endpapers show some light foxing in the margins, and top edge of text also lightly foxed. O/w, covers and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The lower corner of the dj's front flap is clipped and the dustjacket shows wear along the edges and corners with a one-inch closed tear at the bottom of spine on the fold between the dj's back panel and the spine. There is some light age-tanning on the dj's obverse, o/w the dj is whole and currently Brodart protected. A collectable copy at a reasonable price.
