About This Item
This is the first illustrated edition. The author Harris (1795-1856) was the leading entomologist of his time. His papers are held by Harvard U. The first two editions were not illustrated. After he died the Massachusetts Legislature ordered a NEW EDITION to be published with illustrations. (published 1862). There are eight color plates, each perfect and each tissue-protected and containing 95 figires (colored insect illustrations.). There are a further 278 b/w figures. This 1862 edition is the first to be illustrated and generally accepted as the finest edition. More comprehensive than editions by other publishers The gilt moth in heavily embossed brilliant gilt. you see on the scan is repeated at back. The boards are strong (buckram I suppose), heavy, with a fine incuse grill finish. The boards at back are blue/black and probably more representative of the color when published than the front board you see on scan. Spine has gilt scarab at bottom. End pages are red-brown. Page edges are red-brown. 1862 gift inscription on fep.. There are no bumps. I challenge anybody to find a better example of the book than this beauty-not even the ones offered at over a thousand bucks can approach this quality. The grading LIKE NEW may be a slight exaggeration but it is far too beautiful and solid and clean to be graded as merely very good. It is surely the FINEST. Eminently collectible and a MAGNIFICENT GIFT.
xi, 640 p. Illus. , VIII col. Pl. (incl. Front. ) 22 cm. A new ed. , enlarged and improved, with additions from the author's manuscripts and original notes. Drawings by A. Sonrel and J. Burckhardt, engraved and colored by John H. Richard and Henry Marsh. Cf. Pref. Illustrated by engravings drawn from nature under the supervision of Professor Agassiz. Edited by Charles L. Flint
