Providence: Carter and Wilkinson, 1798. Hardcover. See Description. Fifth Revision. 8vo. 652p. Bound in full period sheep with gilt spine label. Binding is sturdy and attractive but reveals the usual signs of rubbing, wear, spots of discoloration, etc. The tail cap of the spine and a couple small spots along the outer joint are carefully repaired/restored. Interior pages show some age toning, scattered foxing, and mild damp staining. Several leaves display crease marks. The inside front cover and front fly-leaf contain a name and date – "Peleg Almy’s book 1798." This is probably Peleg Almy (1761-1854) who was a resident of Rhode Island. This is the fifth revision of the Rhode Island laws. The first edition which appeared in 1719 was the earliest printed edition of Rhode Island law. [Sabin 70626].

Simon van Leeuwen was a 17th-century Dutch lawyer best-known for his history and commentary on Roman-Dutch Law. This book, "Het Rooms-Hollands-regt", was Leeuwen's attempt at writing a reference to daily law in Holland identifying ordinances and customs as well as clarifying and discussing court judgements. This 1678 Dutch printing is an impressive tome – solid and clean vellum binding – a rare and highly desirable 17th-century Dutch law book.

This abridgment followed a few years later and was reprinted three times, the copy here being from the third edition. My listing includes PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK for sale. Book NEAR FINE/ Covers Very Good Plus. Very gently read, if at all. Sewn binding. In its original boards which have a design in blue, red, black, light brown and white in a kind of “c” shape with the opening of the “c” downwards. The spine, quarter boards and triangular covers of all corners are brown leather. The spine has 4 raised sections done in a rope design, two of them framing a red area where the title is done in gilt. The front cover has the paper worn away on top and bottom board edges, exposing the board but with almost no erosion of the boards. The front cover design area has several areas where it is worn away but only the surface design is gone, the board is whole and strong underneath, there are no holes and no gouges or rips. Edizione del 1548 di questa nota opera letteraria scritta da Adriano Castellesi (ca 1485-1521) nato a Corneto (antico nome di Tarquinia) detto anche Adriano da Corneto. Castellesi fu grechista, ebraista, autore di poemetti, opere di stile, grammatiche e filosofico-teologiche. Espertissimo di affari, si arricchì enormemente destando in tal modo l'invidia di Cesare Borgia che tentò di avvelenarlo. Andato in esilio e ritornato in patria all'avvento di Leone X, dovette ritornarvi perchè accusato di aver preso parte alla congiura del Cardinale Petrucci. Da questo momento in poi non si sa più nulla di lui: sembra che sia stato assassinato a scopo di furto da uno dei suoi servitori. Il volume è un'opera didattica latina che riporta termini utilizzati in sentenze classiche latine.
