About This Item
Doubleday, New York, 1955. Reprint. Hardcover. Good Condition/Good. Acknowledgements, list of contributors and glossary. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt embossed design to the front panel; and gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. The top edge of the text block is tinted a dark red. "But Jews, since the days of the Talmud, have been indestructible moralists and teachers. They have turned the joke, the quip, and the humorous characterisation into pedagogic aids with which to illustrate, to eliminate, and to improve." The book is showing age and use: â softening and rubbing of the back strip edges; with, the back strip showing vertical creases, fading (to the point of almost not being able to read the titling) and flecking. Rubbing of the book edges and panels with the panel showing staining and rubbing and a little flecking as well. Light tanning of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. Offset tanning to the end pages and a previous owner had covered the book in plastic and held the plastic down with tape â which has left the inevitable residue to the end pages. Original bookseller's rubber stamp to the top right hand corner of the front paste-down. The hinges are somewhat "loose". Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with a few small tears to the top edge. There is a 1 inch tear to the top left hand corner of the back strip. Rubbing of the dustwrapper with fading of the back strip. There is a horizontal crease that runs the full width of the dustwrapper. Some staining to the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. XXVIII, 738 pages, including a glossary of Yiddish words.. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos.
