New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845. First edition.. Some light scattered foxing to the title page and some of the text; a tight and clean copy in very good condition.. Pp. vii, 1-251; vi, 1-221; 21 text-figures, plate VI only (lacks the other 6 plates and maps). Later black pebble leather, lettered in gilt on the spine, 8vo. This is the first American edition. Lyell travelled extensively throughout Canada and the United States. His travels began in up-state New York and proceeded south to the Carolinas, then through Kentucky, Ohio, and into Canada, where he travelled from Niagara to Toronto, Kingston, Montreal and Nova Scotia. He made numerous geological observations including the idea that the Great Lakes were the remnant of a vast in inland sea. See also Sabin 42761 and Howes L-575.
