First edition. Reeve, Brothers. London. 1846. Octavo. Half title, title, xvi, 562pp. 16pp publishers' catalogue. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. Engraved map. Recent half calf, marbled boards, spine in six compartments with raised banding, gilt motifs, rules and lettering. A little foxing to the frontispiece and map. Edges untrimmed with some browning and chipping to the edges of the frontispiece and title. Tiny hole p3. Occasional minor dogears, marks and smudges. Two subscription library stamps each to verso of the map and frontispiece with faint offsetting. George Gardner (1810 – 1849) F.L.S. was born in Ardentinny, Argyll and Bute, where his father was gardener to the Earl of Dunmore. His travels in Brazil between 1836 and 1841 were undertaken under the patronage of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford and collaboration with Sir William J. Hooker to collect natural history specimens for public and private collections. In 1842 he was elected a Member of the Linnean Society. The writing of this volume was undertaken during his voyage to Ceylon where in 1843 he was appointed Superintendant of the Botanic Garden. He died in 1849 in Kandy.
