About This Item

Dublin: P Wogan, 1801. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. One of the first editions in English of the incredible fabricated African travel narratives from the gentleman known as Zacharias Taurinius. A scarce Dublin imprint. In Two Volumes, Complete. Bound as One. With a fold-out map of Africa. With two engraved frontispieces. One of the first English editions, translated from the German. "One of the cleverest volumes of fabricated travels ever produced. The details are so circumstantial, and the mixture of fact and fiction is accomplished with so much skill, that it is not uncommon to find people who do not know that the account of the travels is nothing more than a well-contrived literary deception" -Mendelssohn. "Christian Friedrich Damberger, whose real name was possibly Zacharias Taurinius, is the pseudonymous author of, or collaborator on, three cleverly contrived hoax narratives of travel, the first published under the name of Joseph Schrodter, the second under the name of Taurinius, and the third under the name of Damberger" -Schrodter (Shoe-Maker), Taurinius (Printer), Damberger (Cabinet-Maker) - One Author, Three Travel Books by Raymond John Howgego In a full calf binding, recently rebacked. Externally, some edgewear to the original boards. Internally, firmly bound, bright, with scattered foxing and some marks. Wth the occasional marginal professional repairs. Very Good
