About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, Ltd. , 1898. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A first edition work detailing William Fitzgerald's travels in British East Africa, with folding maps and illustrations. The first edition. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. With a portrait frontispiece, five folding maps, ten non-folding maps, some of which are in colour, forty-three full-page plates and numerous vignette illustrations. Collated complete. An interesting work detailing William Fitzgerald's travels in British East Africa, and his notes on the agricultural resources and general characteristics. William Walter Augustine Fitzgerald was an Irish traveller, writer, and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In the late nineteenth century, he spent two years exploring the British East African coastlands, whilst being employed to report on their agricultural capabilities by the Director of the Imperial British East Africa Company. The half title page is present. With a previous seller's small number label to the bottom of the front paste-down. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Spine is faded, and some fading to the edges of the front board. Light marks to the boards and bumping to the spine. Hinges starting but still firm. Paste downs and free endpapers are age-toned. Small label to the lower front paste-down. Internally, binding slightly strained but generally firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned with light spotting throughout. Light spotting to the plates and maps. Some creasing and a repaired closed tear to the folding map on page 1. The folding map on page 339 has been repaired neatly with tape. A closed tear has been repaired with tape to the folding map on page 378. There is also a closed tear of about 2.5 inches and a small puncture to this map. The odd page is uncut. Very Good
