Travels in Arabia Deserta in Two Volumes: Volume I and Volume II, Charles M. Doughty. Published by Dover, 1979. Card covers. 8vo up to 9½" tall. Volume 1: 674pp. with appendix, publishers' catalogue, rear fold out map; Volume 2: 696pp. with index and glossary of Arabic words. Contents are clean without markings, tears or folds, binding is tight; outside outer edges have foxing and covers have very light shelf wear.
Travels in Arabia Deserta was originally published in 1888 and describes English poet Charles Doughty's extensive travels through the Arabian deserts and the discoveries he made. The work became well-regarded for its beautiful prose as well as its extensiveness, which made it a benchmark of ambitious travel writing in the early 20th century the 1920's, it was discovered by British Army Officer T.E. Lawrence, who spurred the book's republication, this time with an introduction from Lawrence.
