This book contains several novellas by T.B.Swann, including "The Manor of Roses." This novella has already been reprinted a couple of times in books purporting to contain "classics of American fantasy writers." Set in what appears to be the late English medieval period, "The Manor of Roses" avoids virtually all the cliches of "medieval fantasy" lit, draws the reader into an enchanted world without excessive wordiness, depicts characters and conflict with clear-eyed compassion, and has a truly original, unexpected denouement (speaking as an avid reader with 60 yrs of fantasy reading experience). Even Gardner Dozois, the editor of dozens of science fiction anthologies and strong advocate of "hard SF," recommends this one . . .
